USGS Land Carbon Methodology

The methods described in this document represent a nationally consistent, comprehensive effort to assess carbon storage and GHG fluxes covering the ecosystems of all 50 States. The assessment will rely on the contribution of agencies and scientists for expert evaluation of data, models, and validation, thereby linking to the best available approaches at each phase of the assessment. The results will permit (1) an evaluation of a range of policies and mitigation options, and (2) an evaluation of the effects that changes in demography, LULC, and climate will have on carbon stocks and GHG fluxes in ecosystems. Regional reports are also available for the Great Plains, Western US, and Eastern US.
