- The US EPA reported that in 2012, U.S. greenhouse gas emissions totaled 6,526 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. Emissions in the United States can be divided between three sectors:
- Residential, commercial and industry: Includes emissions from heating buildings, industrial processes and agriculture.
- Transportation: Includes cars, trucks, and air travel.
- Electric power: Includes emissions from the production of electric power.
